From September 9th to 11th, the University of Zurich hosted the ILANSCO Conference - Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Landscapes in Language, Society, and Cognition 2024. The organizing committee included Cristiana Lucchetti, affiliated with the Department of Slavonic Studies and associated with the URPP Language and Space, and Sara Racca, affiliated with both the URPP Language and Space and the Department of Geography, along with Philipp Striedl (Department of German Studies) and Aleksej Tikhonov (Department of Slavonic Studies).
The conference focused on exploring the perception of landscapes from different perspectives and approaches. In its first edition, the event emphasized interdisciplinarity and intended to provide an opportunity for researchers from diverse fields to share their insights, and foster exchange, dialogue and collaboration.
The event brought together over 60 participants and featured 27 paper presentations and 9 poster presentations, other than 4 plenary sessions with invited speakers (Niclas Burenhult from Lund University, Claudia Keller from the University of Zurich, Přemysl Mácha from the Czech Academy of Sciences, and Daniela Francesca Virdis from the University of Cagliari). Presenters came from more than 20 countries and represented a wide range of disciplines, including Geography and GIScience, Urban and Environmental Studies, Psychobiology, Sociology, Anthropology and Ethnology, Linguistics, Language and Literature, Art History, Semiotics, and History.
The presentations, along with informal discussions, resulted in an engaging and dynamic exchange of ideas, with a shared commitment to organizing future events in the same direction.
The organizers are thankful to all participants and supporters, including the URPP Language and Space, for making the event possible.
