Multimodality: I am interested in all forms of communication which are based on several semiotic resources at once. On the one hand, I study the interplay of talk, gestures, and bodily movements in face-to-face interaction (informed by conversation analysis). On the other hand, I analyse the multimodality of communication based on time-stable signs (written language, images, layout, etc.) from a perspective based in text linguistics.

Using video to study the role of space in interaction: A lot of my current research deals with the role of space in and for communication. I am interested in the role of built space in and for face-to-face interaction. In particular, I am looking for a way of conceptualizing space that avoids both spatial determinism and a radically constructivist approach to space in which built space is exclusively conceived of as brought about during interaction. Furthermore, I am interested in how to include space in the study of text communication.

Eye-tracking: In addition to my video-based research, I also study face-to-face interaction with mobile eye-tracking devices. In this context, my main interests are the following: How do we achieve joint attention in face-to-face interaction (especially in side-by-side configurations, where we do not see the eyes of our partners), and how can we use eye-tracking to better understand how individual perceptions are made relevant for social interaction (e.g., when discovering a natural phenomenon in a science center).

Text communication: The question of how readers come to the conclusion that something in their spatial environment – a series of linguistic (and other semiotic) signs – is a text has accompanied me for a long time. The concept of “readability cues”, developed in a project with Heiko Hausendorf, Hiloko Kato and Martina Breitholz, provides an answer to this question. It is inspired by the reconstructive stance and strict orientation to the surface of data in conversation analysis and Luhmann’s sociology.
